We asked Marissa some questions about her work passions, inspirations, and enjoyment activities. Learn more about her and how her relatability and authenticity supports her therapist self.
What types of issues or clients do you feel especially passionate about working with?
I feel especially passionate about helping clients work through relationship issues, whether that is with family, friends, or partners. I tend to take an approach that emphasizes values and communication strategies in this way and am hoping to start working with couples soon. I also enjoy working with individuals with ADHD who are managing grief and navigating the world with a new understanding of themselves and the ways their brain may work differently. I would also love to help clients process pet-loss grief as someone who has lost many pets myself and felt that loss on a very personal level. Finally, I love working with people to help them develop a more compassionate relationship with themselves and become their own best teammate instead of their own worst enemy - to me, there is nothing more powerful!
What’s something that brings you joy or helps you unwind outside of work?
Outside of work, so many things bring me joy and help me unwind! I am big on attending workout classes, weightlifting, and walks to help get some movement in after a relatively sedentary workday of sitting with clients. I also love to cook and spend time outside to help unwind, especially in the summer. Most often, watching shows and playing video games with my partner is the best reward after a long day!
What’s something outside of therapy that inspires or informs your work?
Something outside of therapy that inspires and informs my work are all the wonderful people in my life who have shaped my understanding of the world. Especially when it comes to understanding ADHD, I would not have the same perspective if it were not for my partner, my cousins, my brother, and my friends who have all shared with me different ways that ADHD can look, and importantly, different ways they can all be successful BECAUSE of and in addition to having ADHD.
What life experience has most shaped the way you show up as a therapist?
Every life experience I've had shapes the way I show up as a therapist, but the learning I've obtained from Western's MA Counselling Psychology program through the vulnerability of my classmates and professors is present is every session.
